Dr. Muthoni Karanja
Consultant Psychiatrist · Nairobi, Kenya
MBChB, M.Med Psychiatry — University of Nairobi · Trained at Mathari National Teaching & Referral Hospital
I help people build self-awareness, healthier coping skills, and more grounded, fulfilling lives.
I am a consultant psychiatrist with over a decade in medicine and five years of specialist training in psychiatry, completed at the University of Nairobi and Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital — Kenya's premier psychiatric institution.
My work is about helping people strengthen their mental health, build resilience, and develop healthier coping skills. I work with individuals in clinical care, coach on self-awareness and recovery, and speak in corporate, educational, and faith-based spaces on mental health advocacy and destigmatisation.

Why I do this work.
I am committed to both curative and preventive mental health care — from personalised clinical support to community education. I believe that access to good mental health care should not depend on whether you know the right people or can navigate a confusing system.
In Kenya, mental health is still heavily stigmatised. Too many people wait years before reaching out — often because they are afraid of what they might find, or what others might think. My goal is to be the kind of professional someone feels safe talking to, without needing a crisis to make that call.
You can work with me on…
- Depression and low mood
- Anxiety and worry
- Stress and burnout
- Grief and loss
- Life transitions and adjustment
- Alcohol use concerns
- Workplace mental health
- General psychiatric assessment and diagnosis
- Medication management where appropriate
For conditions requiring inpatient care, or child and adolescent psychiatry, I will refer you to the most appropriate service and remain available to support you through that process.
